So, we have a basic understanding of how to navigate the Sufferfest App. It is almost time to start shedding Sufferlandrian holy water! Before we begin, we must cover a few more things in the workout setup screen. In this article we will cover:
- Basic Overview
- Setting Up Devices
- Streaming Vs. Download
Looking at the image below there are few things that we want to highlight first, before we start to setup our wireless devices. You want to make sure that the Bluetooth setting says "ON" if you are using BLTE, or the ANT + says "ON" if you are using an ANT + dongle.
You can also hit the Scan/Scan Again button to look for all of your devices. If your devices do not automatically connect, we will then connect each one individually.
Setting Up Devices
The first device we will set up is our power meter. This can be a Smart Trainer like the Wahoo KIKCR, a power meter like the Stages Crank arm, or a standard resistance trainer like the Kurt Kinetic for Virtual Power.
IF YOU ARE SETTING UP VIRTUAL POWER, PLEASE LINK YOUR SPEED SENSOR TO THE TRAINER IN THE POWER MENU BEFORE YOU SETUP CADENCE.
You will have two options to setup a device in the Power Meter section; Real Power or Virtual Power.
Any power meter you are using will be displayed just like the image on the left. You may have to pedal your power meter device to wake it up before you can see it displayed. You will also see a display in the upper right which will tell you how your device is connecting to the Sufferfest App (BLTE/ANT). Once you find your device, you can simply pedal to see the corresponding power readings to ensure it works.
A user that sets up Virtual Power will select the "Estimate Power From Speed" box. This will pull up the list of trainers that are integrated into the Sufferfest App. If your trainer is not listed, never fear, we have a general trainer built into the App that you can use. Select the type of trainer you are using and then select the speed sensor that will be used to calculate your virtual power. You may have to move the wheel or pedal to wake up your speed device. If the trainer you are using for virtual power is not listed, you can email TheMinions@TheSufferfest.com and we will work on adding it.
Now that our power meter/virtual power meter is setup, we can now move on to our cadence sensor.
We will see our cadence sensors displayed once we click on the cadence option. You will simply select the cadence sensor you are using. If the cadence sensor is not displaying, you may have to wake it up by turning your pedals. Once your setup is complete, simple select continue.
The last sensor we will connect is our Heartrate monitor.
Just simply attach your Heart rate Monitor and wait for the display to show up. Once you see your heart rate displayed, select continue.
There is nothing more frustrating than delayed suffering due to sensors not connecting. Here are some of the common problems facing Sufferlandrians when trying to connect sensors.
- Dead Battery.
- Bluetooth turned off or ANT + dongle not connected.
- Dirty Heart Rate Strap or corroded connectors.
- The Sufferfest App on your iOS device still has ownership of your sensors. Sometimes, Apps run in the background of our other devices and will not release the sensor to be utilized on your current workout platform.
- Another App like the ones used to update your trainer or another training App on your device are still connected to the device in the background.
- Location of Bluetooth sensor is beyond range of your Mac's receiver.
- Frequency Jamming, your ANT + dongle is plugged into the USB slot next to your Bluetooth Card.
- Sensors are not updated with the most recent software.
- Operating system not updated with the most recent sensors version.
- Sufferfest App not updated with the most recent release.

Now that all of our sensors are attached we only have a few more options left before we start our Suffering! On the image below we can see a very self explanatory workout intensity choice. Of course, we couldn't imagine doing a Sufferfest workout at anything below 100 percent; yet, we know that slaying couchlandrians day after day may require lowering percentages on occasion. You can also change your workout percentages back to 100 percent or higher by pausing the workout when you realize GVA may be watching.
Video Streaming Vs. Download
A great option in the Sufferfest App is the ability to download your videos for offline use. GVA has seen many pictures of Sufferlandrian pain caves and understands that even the best Wifi can be interrupted in the caverns of Mount Sufferlandria. This is why the Sufferfest has implemented the ability to download the videos for offline use. All video downloads are encrypted and can only be used with the App. You cannot take the videos out of the App and play them on another device. If you would like to own a video for personal use, you can go to our website HERE and purchase them individually or in a pack.
Minimum Internet Speed
The Minions at App development suggest a 4mbps download capability as a bare minimum for streaming the Sufferfest videos. 10mbps would be an optimal speed. You can check your download speeds for your internet connection at www.speedtest.net . Also, if you are operating at the minimum streaming suggestion, ensure your internet is not being used for any other tasks, as this will effect streaming performance.
As of now, each method of viewing the Sufferfest videos have different resolutions. This is due to the variety of Internet Speeds that Sufferlandrians are using. Here are the current playback resolutions for each method of viewing a Sufferfest video.
- Purchased Sufferfest HD Videos are displayed at 4400kbs.
- Streaming Sufferfest Videos are displayed at 3200kbs.
- Sufferfest Videos downloaded for offline use are displayed at 2200kbs.
The lower resolution for videos downloaded for offline use are a function of preserving memory space on Sufferlandrian devices.
Now that your equipment is set up to record your suffering, you have verified your workout intensity, and decided if you will run your workout in streaming or download mode; it is time to Suffer greatly!
The next step is to understand your workout environment in the Workout Page.
